The Many Benefits of Eating Grapefruit

The benefits of eating grapefruit are simply amazing, and many who start out their day eating this fruit do not understand just how healthy it truly is. Most of us do understand they are rich in vitamin C and that they can help fight off colds. However the nutrition of grapefruit is much more and should be included in our daily diets to get the full benefits they offer.

Nutrition of Grapefruit

An average sized grapefruit has around 40 calories and will contain 45 milligrams of vitamin C.  Adult males need 75 milligrams while adult females only require 45 milligrams of daily vitamin C. Vitamin C not only helps to fight off colds but it also helps protect against free radicals. Free radicals can increase your risk of developing cancer, heart disease, and other chronic illnesses.

Other Benefits of Eating Grapefruit

Grapefruit has some other nutrients that are extremely beneficial to our health. There is vitamin A, modified citrus pectin, citrus bioflavonoid, fiber, folic acid, flavonoids, potassium, biotin, magnesium copper pantothenic acid, and lycopene.

Eye Health

Lycopene, lutein, and beta-carotene are all photochemicals that are compounds of vitamin A. This helps protect the health of our eyes and lowers the risk of age related degeneration which in turn could lead to vision loss.

Heart

Potassium is high in grapefruit which is one of the many electrolytes that helps your fluid and electrical remain at a healthy balance. Our heart depends on these balances to keep our heart beating at a normal consistent rate. The lack of enough potassium can lead to heartbeats that are not regular and this is known as arrhythmia and can be fatal.

Digestion

One of the benefits of eating grapefruit is the high level of fiber that they contain. Grapefruit, oranges and limes are full of soluble fiber. This type of fiber slows down your digestion and helps all the nutrients be absorbed in your intestines. It helps you with your bowel movements and helps prevent constipation.

Cholesterol

This fruit is loaded with pectin, a soluble fiber that in research has shown to reduce the development of narrowing of the arteries known as atherosclerosis. The pectin helps lower the LDL cholesterol in your system. Additionally it helps protect you from colon and lung cancer.

The American Chemical Society has provided us information that indicates that drinking grapefruit juice helps slow down the activity of enzymes that are known cancer causing carcinogens from tobacco smoke.

Weight Loss

Grapefruit contains enzymes that help increase your metabolism which helps burn fat cells turning them into energy. They have low sodium content and are full of water for hydration. This combination helps with weight loss.  Fresh grapefruit or lemon juice added into your water can help the pounds drop off quicker.

The benefits of eating grapefruit everyday are numerous. The tangy taste is refreshing and cleanses your palette so that you may enjoy the flavors of other foods. It is one of nature’s perfect fruit that is packed with vitamins, low in calories and plentiful year around. Why not start your day off with this wonderful and amazing fruit?
