Fact or urban legend, health cures regarding cinnamon and honey health benefits have been passed down from one generation to the next, and are just one of thousands that have been used for a wide range of ailments. In January 1995 The Weekly World News from Canada published a long list of miracle cures that honey was good for. While this publication is known for being a market store tabloid it is widely copied in informative articles on websites because the wealth of the benefits can’t be denied. 

The History of Cinnamon for Health

Research shows that cinnamon has been used for over 4,000 years due to the health benefits it provides.  We get cinnamon from the bark and branches of the wild trees that grow in Southeast Asia, Ceylon, the Caribbean Islands and South America. The healing powers are derived from the three essential oils known as cinnamyl alcohol, cinnamyl acetate and cinnamaldehyde.

The use of cinnamon has long been reported to have health benefits, some even backed up by scientific research and medical studies. According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health cinnamon helps reduce infections, treat diarrhea, muscle spasms, colds, erectile dysfunction, loss of a person’s appetite, and vomiting. Other studies revealed that cinnamon also helped other ailments such as insomnia, diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s fever, arthritis, HIV, psoriasis, cancer, heart problems, peptic ulcers with asthma, and is a circulatory stimulant. 

Why is Cinnamon so Healthy?

The U.S. Dept. of Agriculture  has determined that ten grams of ground cinnamon contains 24.7kcal of energy, 0.12 g of fat, 8.06 g of carbohydrates, and 0.4 grams of protein, all of which is needed by our system.

People who are sensitive to this spice may have a higher risk of liver damage. This happens because of the coumarin in it, with the species from Ceylon containing the least amount. Overall this makes it a healthier choice over other cinnamons that are available on the market. 

The History of Honey for Health

Honey is another natural food that has been used for thousands of years as food and medicine. It is mentioned in many ancient Egyptian texts, along with the Bible, Torah and the Quran, all books that are filled with wisdom and guidance. The Bible mentions the word honey 61 times and the four main products that make up honey which are Bee Pollen, Honey, Royal Jelly and Propolis. These ingredients have been used over the centuries to treat a wide variety of illnesses and ailments. Honey has been offered to the Gods as a sacrifice, used in cosmetics and even to help embalm bodies. 

How is Honey Healthy?

Honey contains all 8 of the essential amino acids that our bodies need as well as Riboflavin, Iron, Vitamin B6, Manganese, and Omega-3 fatty acids. A teaspoon or about 15 grams contains 64 calories, 17.3 grams of carbohydrates, and 0.1 grams of protein. It is the only food known that will not spoil due to the added enzymes that the bees add in while they process the nectar. 

Is Honey Better than Sugar?

Looking deeper into the make-up of honey studies show that the Propolis found in honey is a product from tree sap that has numerous cancer preventing photo chemicals. Bee pollen is made up of around 40% protein and contains most of the ingredients to sustain human life. Royal Jelly has been considered to be a general tonic that promotes hair growth, helps with menopause and sexual performance and is said to help prevent wrinkles. Honey may also help with stomach ulcers, burns, coughs, cancer, skin infections, sinusitis, constipation, liver disease, asthma and more.

Is honey better than sugar…the answer is no. Sugar has been labeled as a substance that adds to gaining weight, increased health issues and the cause of hyperactivity in kids. It not only contains a high calorie count but it also is made up with partial fructose and will impact insulin levels. It will increase them giving a quick burst of energy that is often followed by a drop causing a person to feel hungry and crave more. This of course adds to a higher calorie intake causing weight gain.

Is Honey Healthy for Kids?

Raw honey is the healthiest choice and a natural alternative to use as a sweetener compared to regular sugar. However it is important to notate that it too comes with a large added calorie count so watching intake amounts is important. Also, it contains bacteria that is friendly and can help the digestive system. It has also been found to be very effective as a suppressant for coughing in children 2-18 yrs. of age.

It is important to note though that honey is not recommended for children under a year of age. 

Cinnamon and Honey Health Benefits Together

With all the cinnamon and honey health benefits they should become a part of our daily food intake. There are many easy ways to add it into your diet that are simple and tasty. A few ideas are to try a healthy piece of wheat toast and add some honey and cinnamon on top. Another is baked apples with added honey and cinnamon or even adding both to your morning coffee.  

Cinnamon and honey health benefits are tremendous and when shared together can only help a person looking to achieve a healthier lifestyle. When cinnamon and honey health benefits are incorporated into a daily meal plan, it is a healthier and smarter alternative than the use of sugar, and will improve your overall health and well-being.
