What is Vinyasa Yoga and it’s Many Benefits?

What is Vinyasa yoga? The word yoga comes from the Sanskrit root yuj which means "to yoke" or "to join" the physical and spiritual together as one. Ultimately it means “flow” in Sanskrit terms. Yoga has been practiced and taught for several thousand years and has developed different disciplines, styles and ideologies. This form of yoga is no exception.

For the Beginner

Vinyasa yoga is a great place to start for the beginner. It is a place to learn to challenge yourself and get acquainted with the basics. If you enjoy feeling the power of breathing and the free flow of the movements then this is a good choice for you. If you are still not sure after several classes it is worth trying the program again with a different teacher. Since there is not a set of guidelines chiseled in stone, or a how to do yoga book that is a must follow it leaves a lot of room for individualized interpretation, styles can change with each instructor. Once you are familiar with the disciplines you can consider trying other styles. 

What is Vinyasa Yoga Basics?

The basis of this form of yoga is the aspect of breathing, and you will be instructed to inhale and exhale as you move to different positions. The physical benefits of increased breathing helps you maintain a high oxygen level and will help rejuvenate all of the cells in your body. The movement from one discipline to another will cause you to sweat which helps remove the toxins your body has collected. 

How to Get Started Right

What should you expect once you have decided to proceed with this new experience? Viewing YouTube videos is a great way to see what the movements look like and get familiar with them. Try practicing them to help you get more comfortable with them before taking a class. Encourage a friend to join you when taking classes or practicing at home to learn together. This is a great way to get motivated and continue through accountability. Make it fun and something you will look forward to. 

When you go to the class wear something that is very comfortable, easy to move in, breathable and something that is easy to wash. You can plan on breaking a good sweat. Take a large towel along with a bottle of water and a workout mat.  Some studios will provide or rent you these items. Inquire with the instructor to determine what they provide.

Plan enough time to cool down following the routine.  Your mind and body have been connected to an inner peace; enjoy this cool down time to reflect on what you have accomplished. Try not to rush off to work or to get the children from school. Let the lasting effect of peace help provide relaxation to you mentally and physically.

While the names and yoga terminology sound strange to us in the western world,   it is something that has been practiced and passed down for many generations. One thing you will notice when you start attending yoga classes is the people who have been doing it for a period of time are all thin and well-toned. 

So, what is Vinyasa yoga to you? It can be an open door to a better and healthier you. Through this form of exercise you will find yourself sleeping better at night, and you will feel better about yourself. Through consistency you will look better as well. Your overall well-being will be healthier and happier. This is a great step to walking a path into a healthier lifestyle.
